Why Is Your Commercial Pool Cloudy? A Troubleshooting Guide for Operators

A commercial pool turns cloudy when tiny suspended particles build up in the water faster than your filter can remove them. Almost every case traces back to one of four causes: unbalanced chemistry, weak filtration or circulation, a sanitizer level that cannot keep up with bather load, or the first stage of an algae bloom.

Cloudy water is the problem operators call about most, and it is also the one that gets facilities shut down fastest. When an inspector cannot see the main drain from the deck, the pool closes on the spot, because a bottom that is not clearly visible means a swimmer in distress could go unseen. The good news is that clearing a cloudy pool is a systematic process. Diagnose which of the four causes you have, correct it in the right order, and the water comes back clear. What Cloudy Pool Water Actually Is

Cloudiness is turbidity: light scattering off particles suspended in the water. Those particles, dead algae, fine dirt, precipitated calcium, body oils, and organic waste, are far too small for the human eye to see individually, but together they haze the water. Most of them are smaller than the pores of a sand filter, which is why cloudy water rarely clears just by running the pump longer.

For a commercial operator, turbidity is not a cosmetic issue. Health codes almost universally require that the main drain or a defined depth marker be clearly visible from the deck. Nevada, like most jurisdictions, treats loss of bottom visibility as an imminent health hazard that requires immediate closure. So cloudy water is both a safety failure and a compliance failure, and it needs a fast, correct response rather than guesswork.

The Four Causes of Cloudy Commercial Pool Water

Before you add a single chemical, figure out which category you are dealing with. Testing tells you most of what you need to know in five minutes.

1. Unbalanced water chemistry. This is the most common cause. When pH climbs above the 7.2 to 7.6 target range, chlorine loses efficiency and dissolved minerals begin to fall out of solution. High total alkalinity, above the 80 to 120 ppm range, and high calcium hardness, above the 200 to 400 ppm range, push the water toward scaling, and that precipitating calcium carbonate shows up as a fine white haze. High total dissolved solids can do the same. Test first: if pH and alkalinity are high, chemistry is almost certainly your culprit. 2. Poor filtration or circulation. Your filter is the only thing physically removing particles from the water. If it is channeled, undersized, past due for a backwash, or the pump is not running enough hours, particles stay suspended. Check filter pressure against your clean baseline; a reading 8 to 10 psi above baseline means the filter needs attention. Check that all return jets are flowing and that the pump runs enough hours to achieve full turnover. 3. Sanitizer overwhelmed by bather load. A busy hotel or apartment pool on a hot afternoon takes in sweat, sunscreen, lotion, and organic debris faster than a marginal chlorine residual can oxidize it. When free chlorine sits below 1 ppm, that organic load accumulates and clouds the water. If your free chlorine is low and combined chlorine is elevated, bather load has outrun your sanitizer. Free chlorine should stay in the 1 to 3 ppm range at all times a commercial pool is open.

4. Early-stage algae. Before algae coats the walls green, it clouds the water with a faint dull or greenish haze. Water that looks cloudy and slightly off-color, especially with a low or zero chlorine reading, is often algae in its earliest bloom. Step-by-Step: How to Clear a Cloudy Commercial Pool

Work these steps in order. The sequence matters, because balancing chemistry before you filter is what makes the filter effective.

Step 1: Test a full panel. Free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid. Use a reliable drop-based kit rather than strips for these readings. Your results tell you which of the four causes you are facing, and often more than one is at play.

Step 2: Balance pH and alkalinity first. Bring pH into the 7.2 to 7.6 range and alkalinity into 80 to 120 ppm. Chlorine works far better and calcium stays in solution when pH is correct. Step 3: Restore and, if needed, shock the chlorine. Bring free chlorine back into range. Step 4: Run the filter continuously and backwash on schedule. After shocking, run the filtration system around the clock until the water clears. As the filter loads up with particles, pressure rises; backwash a sand filter when it reaches 8 to 10 psi above its clean baseline, then keep filtering. This is where most of the actual clearing happens.

Step 5: Use a clarifier or flocculant only if needed. If the water is still hazy after chemistry is balanced and the filter has run, a clarifier coagulates fine particles into larger clumps the filter can catch. A flocculant drops them to the floor to be vacuumed to waste. These are tools to help the filter, not substitutes for it, and they only work once your chemistry is already correct.

How to Prevent Cloudy Water in the First Place

Every cloudy-water emergency is a maintenance gap that got ignored. Prevention is far cheaper than a closure. Test at least twice daily on a commercial pool, early morning and mid-afternoon, and log every reading so you can spot a trend before it becomes a haze. Keep free chlorine in the 1 to 3 ppm range at all times, and raise it proactively before a high-traffic weekend or event rather than reacting after the water clouds.

Maintain your filter on a schedule instead of waiting for pressure to spike, and confirm your pump runs enough hours to turn the full pool volume over within the time your code requires. Keep pH and alkalinity in range so calcium never has a reason to precipitate. A pool that is tested, balanced, and filtered on a consistent routine simply does not cloud up, and that consistency is also what an inspector is looking for when they review your logs.

How long does it take to clear a cloudy commercial pool?

Once chemistry is balanced and the filter is running continuously, most cloudy pools clear within 24 to 48 hours. A pool clouded only by a chemistry imbalance can start clearing within hours of correcting pH. Should I close the pool while I clear it?
