CPO Certification in Nevada

Both of Nevada’s big health districts require a certified operator for permitted pools. In Las Vegas, that operator also registers with the Southern Nevada Health District.

What Nevada requires

Nevada’s public bathing place rules are in NRS Chapter 444 and NAC 444.010 to 444.546. The Southern Nevada Health District (Clark County) and Northern Nevada Public Health (Washoe County) run their own programs, and the state Division of Public and Behavioral Health covers the rural counties.

Las Vegas and Clark County: SNHD requires a Qualified Operator for permitted aquatic facilities. The operator completes a national qualified pool operator certification course and registers with SNHD before working at a facility. One registration covers every facility you work at.

Reno, Sparks and Washoe County: every permitted pool and spa must have at least one Certified Pool Operator, and Northern Nevada Public Health says the PHTA CPO is the only national certification it accepts. The certificate has to be posted on site.

  • CPO PRO is based in Las Vegas. Teams of 10 or more in the Las Vegas area can have Samuel run the class at their property.
Taking the class from Nevada

One online course and one live test day.

You do the PHTA CPO Fusion coursework online at your own pace, about 6 hours for most people, then join Samuel on Zoom for one live test day. Test days run every Tuesday and Saturday at 9:00 AM Pacific (9 AM Pacific). Pass the 50-question exam and Samuel issues your certificate the same day from the PHTA instructor portal. It is good for five years.

Neither district’s rules say anything about classroom versus online. The PHTA CPO card is the same card either way.

$395 covers the course, the printed PHTA handbook, the live test day, the proctored exam, the certification, two retakes proctored by Samuel (PHTA charges $75 per retake), a free copy of The Pool Operator Playbook, and lifetime access to the CPO PRO operator community.

Yes. Northern Nevada Public Health requires at least one Certified Pool Operator for every permitted pool and spa in Washoe County, accepts only the PHTA CPO as a national certification, and wants the certificate posted on site.
