How Long Is CPO Certification Valid?

A CPO certification is valid for five years. To renew, you take a PHTA CPO course again and pass the exam. PHTA does not use continuing education credits for CPO renewal. Retaking the course keeps operators current with industry standards and evolving regulations.

If your card is still active, you can renew through the PHTA CPO Fusion online course plus the exam, or by attending the second day of an instructor-led course for the review and exam. Any PHTA Certified Instructor can run your renewal.

How Do You Get CPO Certified?

The path to CPO certification involves two main steps:

Step 1: Self-paced online course. You complete the PHTA CPO Fusion online course covering the CPO exam topics. Most students finish it in about 6 hours, working at your own pace. The pre-study gives you the foundational knowledge you need for the exam.

Step 2: The CPO exam. After the online course, you take the PHTA CPO exam: 50 multiple-choice questions, open book, with a 3-hour limit. A PHTA instructor proctors it, either in person or live over Zoom.

To pass and receive your CPO certification, you need 37 correct answers out of 50. At CPO PRO, 97% of students pass on the first attempt. If you do not pass, PHTA allows up to 2 retakes within 6 months, and you do not have to repeat the online course.
